Pets over 9 years of age at the time of enrollment are only eligible for their accident-only coverage.

In states where it is covered, the condition being treated must be diagnosed by a veterinarian, be eligible for coverage under your policy, and treatment must be recommended by your veterinarian.

Pre-existing Conditions Policy Pre-existing conditions are not covered.

Some policies in some states offer coverage for pre-existing conditions after a 12-month waiting period.

According to their sample policy on their website, a pre-existing condition is "... any Illness or Injury which occurred, reoccurred, existed or showed Symptoms, whether or not diagnosed by a Veterinarian, prior to the Pet Original Start Date, Coverage Period or during the Waiting Period."

Hereditary & Congenital Conditions Coverage To get hereditary and congenital coverage, you must purchase the HereditaryPlus addon.

Pet must be under 2 years of age to purchase this addon.

Chronic Conditions Policy Based on their website, here are a few examples of conditions that are not covered unless you purchase the HereditaryPlus addon:

Bilateral Conditions Policy If a bilateral condition happens on one side before they policy starts or during the waiting period, that condition will not be covered if it happens on the other side. Even if it happens after the waiting period.

The way it is written in their policy it appears this applies to all bilateral conditions (e.g. eye problems, ear problems, knee problems, hip problems, etc)

How is Reimbursement Determined Reimbursement is based on UCR (usual and customary). This means the company uses typical fees or the cost that Veterinarians charge in your geographic area based on available veterinary fee information and proprietary data.

It is not clear whether reimbursements are calculated by taking the deductible first or the reimbursement percentage first.
Max Payout Annually Choose from $2,500, $5,000, $7,500, $10,000, $15,000, $20,000, or Unlimited

Behavioral Therapy Coverage has an annual maximum benefit of $1,000.
Max Lifetime Payout AKC Pet Insurance does not have a maximum lifetime payout
Max Payout per Incident If you select the Basic plan instead of a Customized plan, there will be a per-incident Limit of $500. This means $500 will be the maximum amount they will reimburse your for an individual injury or illness over the life of the pet.
Max Payout Based on Body System AKC Pet Insurance does not have a maximum payout based on body system
Client Reimbursed or Vet Paid Directly You pay the veterinarian and then you are reimbursed after you file the claim.
